Researchers at IIT-B’s chemical engineering department have developed a special membrane that can reduce the cost of dialysis by 50%. Due to the high cost of the procedure, around 90% of those who develop kidney failure in India die within months because of lack of treatment, according to an AIIMS study. The hollow-fiber membrane developed by the team at IIt Bombay has completed laboratory tests and awaits pre-clinical trials. An Indian patent has been procured for the product. An indigenous and low-cost pilot plant for production of these membranes has also been functioning for the last two years.
