Dialysis is the process of artificially removing waste and excess water from the blood in people suffering from chronic kidney failure. Due to the high cost of the procedure, around 90% of those who develop kidney failure in India die within months because of lack of treatment, according to an AIIMS study. “This new membrane promises faster, efficient dialysis with less side affects at a significantly lower cost,” said Jayesh Bellare, who is leading the IIT team.Diabetics are at particular risk of developing kidney failure. Annually two lakhs people in the country develop advanced kidney failure. The number of Indians with diabetes is predicted to reach 101 million by 2030. An Indian patent has been procured for the product. An indigenous and low-cost pilot plant for production of these membranes has also been functioning for the last two years
