The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research is India’s premier institution for advanced research in fundamental sciences. The Institute runs a graduate program leading to the award of Ph.D., Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. as well as M.Sc. degree in certain subjects. With its distinguished faculty, world class facilities and stimulating research environment, it is an ideal place for aspiring scientists to initiate their career.
The Graduate Program at TIFR is classified into the following Subjects – Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer & Systems Sciences (including Communications and Applied Probability) and Science Education. It is conducted at the Mumbai campus and various National Centers of TIFR.
The TIFR Nationwide Entrance Examination (GS2017) for Biology is also called the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS).
Eligibility
- For Ph.D. Masters in Basic Science or Bachelors in Applied Science. These include, M.Sc.(Ag.), B.Tech., B.E., B.V.Sc., B.Pharma. (4 years course), MBBS, BDS, M.Pharma. Candidates will be short-listed for interview based on written test marks, CV and Scientific Writeup.
- For I-Ph.D./M.Sc. Bachelors in any Basic Science.
- For M.Sc. Wildlife Biology & Conservation Indian nationals who have a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (with a minimum of 50% in core subjects), less than 35 years of age as on July 1, 2017 and a strong interest in wildlife research and conservation. Graduate nationals of South and Southeast Asian countries, with similar qualifications, are also eligible to apply.
- For Ph.D. Program in TCIS M.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry or Biology.

- 18th October 2017: Last date for Online payment of fee
- 20th October 2017: Last Date for the receipt of DD/ Courier at GS-2017 office.
- 10th November 2017: Date for download of Admit Card

NOTE: Each participating institution has its own admission procedure, and only the test scores of the TIFR exam (JGEEBILS) are common. Students need to apply separately to the concerned institution, indicating the TIFR Entrance Test Reference Code. Please refer to the individual websites of participating institutions for details of their admissions process. Results of the TIFR Entrance Test for Biology (JGEEBILS) will be shared by all participating institutions.

The test will be extremely basic and cover topics in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.
